Mycoplasma Genitalium

What is it?

Mycoplasma Genitalium is a bacterium that can infect both men and women and can be passed through sexual contact.

How do I know if I have it? What are the symptoms?

In most cases of mycoplasma genitalium, the sufferer shows no symptoms. However, for women who have symptoms, they may include:

· Burning or painful sensation during urination

· Vaginal itching

· Pain during sex

In men, Mycoplasma Genitalium is often diagnosed in those who suffer from Urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) which is not caused by Gonorrhoea or Chlamydia. Symptoms in men (if they are present) may include:

· Urethral discharge

· Burning or painful sensation during urination

· Arthritis (pain and swelling in the joints)

Mycoplasma Testing ~ Testing for Mycoplasma Genitalium

Treating Mycoplasma Genitalium

Mycoplasma Genitalium is treated with antibiotics. Typically, Clarithromycin is prescribed to treat Mycoplasma infections but Doxycycline is also an option.
